Petron is developing a renewable-hydrogen pathway based on ethanol reforming. The concept is designed to convert renewable ethanol into a hydrogen-rich process gas, followed by purification to deliver hydrogen suitable for targeted industrial and chemical applications.
Petron’s solution & differentiators
This technology is being developed as a complementary option to renewable-electricity-based electrolysis or as a stand-alone solution. It may be particularly relevant for biorefinery locations with renewable ethanol availability, established ethanol logistics, and opportunities for close process and energy integration.
By utilizing ethanol as a renewable hydrogen carrier and feedstock, Petron aims to develop a flexible route that can support hydrogen production where access to low-cost renewable electricity, grid capacity, or large-scale hydrogen transport infrastructure may be constrained.
Petron’s development program focuses on:
- Ethanol reforming-process configuration and catalyst performance.
- Hydrogen yield, purity, and recovery optimization.
- Energy efficiency and heat-integration opportunities.
- Steam, fuel, and utility-consumption minimization.
- Carbon-dioxide separation, capture, utilization, and management options.
- Integration with ethanol-production facilities and biorefinery utilities.
- Scale-up, operability, safety, and techno-economic assessment.
