Petron is developing a proprietary fermentation technology to produce renewable propanol from biogenic feedstocks. Currently in research and development, the platform is designed for future integration with advanced biorefineries, renewable-carbon value chains, and lower-carbon chemical production.
Petron’s solution & differentiators
- Proprietary development program: Petron is developing its own fermentation-based renewable-propanol pathway rather than relying solely on conventional fossil-derived propanol supply.
- Biorefinery integration: the technology is being developed to connect with G1.0, G1.5, and potential G2.0 biorefinery configurations.
- Renewable-carbon platform: renewable feedstocks can be converted into a higher-value three-carbon alcohol intermediate.
- Process-engineering expertise: Petron applies expertise in fermentation integration, separations, distillation, utilities, heat recovery, water management, and product purification.
- Flexible product strategy: development can be directed toward propanol grades and downstream applications that match market demand and project economics.
- Co-product valorization: the platform can evaluate recovery and beneficial use of fermentation co-products, process energy, and biogenic CO₂ streams.
- Scalable development approach: research findings will be translated into laboratory validation, pilot development, process design, techno-economic assessment, and potential commercial scale-up.
Applicable feedstocks & products
Fermentable sugars derived from conventional starch or sugar feedstocks obtained from non-edible sources, as well as biomass, to produce renewable propanol. The resulting propanol feeds Petron’s Bio-Propylene dehydration technology.
