Petron’s renewable-butanol concept is designed to convert suitable renewable feedstocks into a butanol-containing fermentation broth. Depending on the selected biological pathway and product-recovery configuration, Petron’s technology may target renewable n-butanol, isobutanol, or a defined butanol-rich product stream.
Petron’s solution & differentiators
Petron’s research and development program is focused on the technical and commercial factors required to establish a viable renewable-butanol process:
- Fermentation-pathway selection for n-butanol, iso-butanol, or other defined butanol products.
- Microorganism productivity, selectivity, robustness, and solvent tolerance.
- Feedstock compatibility, pretreatment, hydrolysis, and inhibitor management.
- Butanol titer, yield, productivity, and overall carbon efficiency.
- Management, recovery, and potential valorization of acetone, ethanol, and other co-products.
- In-situ or downstream product-recovery methods to reduce butanol inhibition.
- Separation, dehydration, purification, and final product-quality control.
- Heat integration, utility consumption, water use, and wastewater-treatment optimization.
- Safety, operability, reliability, and scale-up engineering.
Applicable feedstocks & products
Fermentable sugars derived from conventional starch or sugar feedstocks obtained from non-edible sources, as well as biomass, to produce renewable butanol. The resulting butanol feeds Petron’s Bio-Butene dehydration technology.
