Green Hydrogen (Electrolyzer)

At Petron, green hydrogen is an essential building block for the decarbonized molecules and energy systems of tomorrow. We integrate green hydrogen production and use into biorefinery and chemical-process platforms, helping transform renewable electricity, biogenic carbon, and sustainable feedstocks into lower-carbon fuels and chemicals.

Petron’s solution & differentiators

Petron delivers integrated green-hydrogen solutions based on water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. Through selected technology partners, we combine proven electrolyzer systems with Petron’s process-engineering and biorefinery-integration capabilities to convert renewable power and water into high-purity hydrogen for industrial applications. Electrolysis separates water into hydrogen and oxygen, with emissions performance depending on the source of electricity supplied to the system.

Rather than treating the electrolyzer as a standalone package, Petron designs the complete production system around each client’s site conditions, operating philosophy, utility infrastructure, and downstream hydrogen demand.

Our scope can include the integration of:

  • Renewable-power and electrical interconnection strategy.
  • Water treatment and demineralized-water supply.
  • Electrolyzer-package integration through qualified technology partners.
  • Hydrogen purification, drying, compression, storage, and distribution.
  • Oxygen handling, recovery, or beneficial-use assessment.
  • Cooling, heat-recovery, and utility-system integration.
  • Process safety, controls, and hydrogen-management systems.
  • Downstream conversion to e-methanol and other low-carbon products.

Designed for biorefineries

Petron specializes in connecting green-hydrogen production with biorefinery assets and renewable-carbon streams. Captured biogenic CO₂ can be purified and combined with green hydrogen to produce e-methanol, creating a pathway to upgrade renewable carbon into a valuable chemical and fuel intermediate. E-methanol facilities commonly use renewable-powered electrolysis to supply hydrogen for the synthesis process.

Our integrated approach considers electricity availability, water balance, steam demand, compression requirements, CO₂ quality, hydrogen purity, product storage, and site logistics from the earliest project stage.

Why Petron

  • Partner-enabled technology: access to established electrolyzer technology through strategic partnerships.
  • Full-system engineering: integration beyond the electrolyzer, including utilities, gas conditioning, storage, safety, and downstream use.
  • Biorefinery expertise: practical understanding of ethanol, biogenic CO₂, steam systems, power demand, and renewable-carbon conversion.
  • Project-specific design: solutions tailored to production capacity, renewable-power profile, operating flexibility, and product requirements.
  • Pathway to e-molecules: integrated hydrogen and CO₂ solutions for e-methanol and other low-carbon chemical applications.

Applicable feedstocks & products

Mainly purified water and power are required to produce green hydrogen. As a co-product of the electrolysis process, oxygen is obtained.

Commercial maturity

Commercially available through Petron’s co-development partnerships, integrated with the wider biorefinery platform.

How it works

The integrated system

Illustrated integrated green hydrogen system: solar panels feed a power electronics cabinet that powers the electrolyzer, a water tank supplies the water, and compressors send the oxygen and hydrogen streams to separate storage tanks, with a dispenser drawing from the hydrogen tank.
